Southern Coast & Oslofjord

By April the first bright, warm days appear and cherry blossoms can pop in parks around Oslo and Drøbak; still, nights can dip below freezing in inland pockets. Roadside patches of snow linger on shaded ridges, but coastal promenades warm enough for light sweaters and coffee outdoors. Spring festivals start to reappear, and ferry services to islands in the Oslofjord increase; pack sunglasses, a windproof layer, and shoes that handle both mud and slush.

Western Fjords & Bergen Region

By April some lower-elevation trails around Flåm and the fjord villages open up as snow melts, revealing swollen waterfalls and rushing rivers that make fjord scenery especially showy. Temperatures warm into the single digits and teens on sunny days, but rain remains common and mountain roads can still close after late snow. Book train journeys like the Flåm Railway in advance for longer daylight runs, and bring layered clothing to handle sun, rain and cool evenings.

Inland Highlands & Mountains (Hardangervidda, Lillehammer, Røros)

April is the start of spring in earnest at lower altitudes, while higher trails still maintain good snow; daytime temperatures swing from chilly to pleasantly mild, creating variable conditions for hikers and skiers alike. Roadside melting fills rivers and waterfalls near Rjukan, making the scenery dramatic and noisy; bring good hiking boots and a weatherproof shell. Expect fewer crowds at mountain hotels and a good chance to combine late-season skiing with thawing valley walks.

Northern Norway (Lofoten, Tromsø, Alta, North Cape)

April shifts markedly: Tromsø sees brightening days and often a string of sunny, crisp days ideal for snow-based activities, though the coastal areas remain changeable. The melting season begins in sheltered lowlands, while higher peaks keep winter conditions; fjord cruises that skirt Lofoten and Vesterålen gain clearer waters. For photographers, late winter light is beautiful; for travellers, fewer tourists and extended daylight make planning easier-still bring warm clothing.

Svalbard & Arctic Islands (Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen)

April sees rapidly lengthening daylight and more stable snow surfaces - a transition month when guided expeditions become longer and boat options start to appear where ice retreated. The landscape is intensely bright under long days, allowing extensive exploration of glaciers and fjords by snowmobile and, toward late April, by limited sea access close to shore. Expect very cold mornings and strong sun reflection off the snow; high-quality sunglasses and sunblock are vital.
