Northbrook Island
Island Remote Franz Josef Land island in the Russian Arctic
Northbrook Island is an uninhabited Arctic island in Russia’s Arkhangelskaya oblast, forming part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago. It is remote and lies well inside the high Arctic.
The island has no visitor facilities and is reached only by specialized polar expedition vessels when sea-ice conditions permit. Wildlife typical of Franz Josef Land such as polar bears, seals and seabirds occurs in the region, but there are no organized services for tourism on the island itself.
Franz Josef Land was explored and charted by late 19th-century polar expeditions; Northbrook Island was named during that period and later became part of Soviet and then Russian-administered Arctic territory. The island has remained unpopulated and largely unchanged by development.
Geographically it sits in the Arctic Ocean as part of the Franz Josef Land group, hundreds of kilometres north of the Russian mainland and more than 1,000 km north of Arkhangelsk.
- Access: No permanent population and no visitor infrastructure; access is by expedition vessel and subject to Arctic ice conditions.
- Setting: Part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago within Arkhangelsk Oblast and situated well inside the Arctic Circle.
How to Get to Northbrook Island #
Northbrook Island (part of Franz Josef Land / Arkhangelskaya oblast) is remote Arctic territory with no public transport. Access is by icebreaker or expedition cruise from Russian ports such as Murmansk, or by research vessel; some trips include helicopter transfers depending on the expedition.
If planning travel, book an organized Arctic expedition from Murmansk with an operator experienced in Franz Josef Land - there are no roads or commercial flights to the island and travel is seasonal and weather‑dependent.
Tips for Visiting Northbrook Island #
- Access to Northbrook Island is only practical via licensed Arctic expedition cruises operating out of Murmansk or Longyearbyen - plan a July-August voyage when sea ice is at its minimum and landings are most likely.
- Expect strict Russian park regulations and brief zodiac landings; operators will brief visitors on polar-bear safety and heritage-protection rules - follow those briefings closely and keep group landings to the permitted paths.
- Look for traces of early polar expeditions and tidy walrus or seal haul-outs during the landing - bring a telephoto lens or allow crew time ashore for photography since on-island time is often limited.
Best Time to Visit Northbrook Island #
Accessible only during the short polar summer (typically July-August) when sea ice is reduced and expedition cruises can reach the island.
