North Pagai (Pagai Utara) is one of the Pagai islands in the Mentawai archipelago off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a remote, low-lying tropical island within a chain known for strong surf and traditional Mentawai communities.

The island is sparsely populated and covered largely by tropical forest and coastal mangroves, with small villages and limited infrastructure. Sea transport from mainland Sumatra, typically Padang, is the primary access route and voyages can take several hours.

Historically the Mentawai Islands have distinct indigenous cultures and livelihoods based on fishing and small-scale agriculture; the islands are also noted among surfers and eco-tourists for remote beaches and reef breaks.

North Pagai lies in the Indian Ocean off western Sumatra and is part of West Sumatra province, within a remote island chain stretching along the Sumatran coast.

How to Get to North Pagai #

Fly to Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG), the main gateway for the Mentawai Islands, then transfer by road or taxi into Padang city to the Muara/Teluk Bayur harbor. From Muara/Teluk Bayur there are regular speedboats, ferries and private charters that cross to the Mentawai Islands (services operate intermittently and take several hours to reach islands farther south like North Pagai); schedule and travel time depend on weather and operator.

Most visitors plan the sea leg from Padang; local transfers from Padang city to the harbor are a short taxi ride. Inland road names and exact schedules vary by operator, so confirm boat times in Padang before travel.

Tips for Visiting North Pagai #

  • Plan your visit during the dry season (roughly May-September) when sea conditions are calmer and boat transfers from Padang/Bungus Bay to the Mentawai islands are more reliable.
  • Book boat transfers or a surf charter in advance and confirm pick-up at Bungus Bay (Padang) rather than relying on infrequent public ferries; same-day arrangements are often unavailable.
  • If you want quieter experiences, arrange trips to lesser-known breaks or inland Mentawai villages - many visitors stick to the main surf spots, so hiring a local skipper or guide opens up more remote beaches and cultural visits.
  • Allow extra travel time and confirm accommodations ahead: North Pagai has limited facilities and transport can be delayed by weather, so a flexible schedule prevents missed connections.
