North Carolina State Capitol

The North Carolina State Capitol is the 19th-century statehouse located on Capitol Square in Raleigh, North Carolina, completed in 1840 and built in the Greek Revival style. It served as the seat of the state government in the 19th century and remains an important historic building in the state capital.

The building contains preserved historic rooms and period architectural features and is frequently visited for guided tours and educational visits that explain its architecture and role in state government. Its exterior and the surrounding Capitol Square are commonly photographed and used for civic events.

Construction of the present capitol took place in the 1830s and was completed in 1840 to replace earlier state government buildings; it functioned as the primary seat of state government through the 19th century. Over time newer government buildings were added nearby and the Capitol’s role shifted toward ceremonial, historic and museum functions.

The Capitol sits in the centre of Raleigh’s downtown grid, on a landscaped square that is surrounded by civic buildings and streets. It is immediately accessible from central Raleigh and is a short walk from other downtown destinations.
