North Cape (Norway)
Cape Cliff-top northern cape famed for midnight sun views
At Nordkapp (North Cape) on Magerøya, tourists visit the cliff-top plateau and visitor centre for Arctic Ocean views, midnight sun in summer and the sense of latitude at Europe’s northern roads end.
A high cliff plateau on the island of Magerøya in northern Norway famous as a prominent Arctic viewpoint, often marketed as one of Europe’s northernmost road-accessible tourist destinations. The site includes a year-round visitor centre offering exhibitions and services.
The main attraction is the open cliff edge with expansive views north over the Barents Sea; the visitor centre offers indoor exhibits, a cinema and viewing terraces for inclement weather. The site is popular for its polar daylight phenomena, including the midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter.
The headland has long been used as a maritime landmark; in the 20th century it developed into an organised tourist destination with infrastructure added to receive year-round visitors. Modern facilities were built to support exhibitions and visitor services.
Situated on the northern coast of Magerøya island in Troms og Finnmark county, the plateau lies north of Honningsvåg and is reached by road through the North Cape Tunnel and local highways.
- Height and status: The cliff plateau stands at about 307 metres above the sea and is often promoted as a northernmost European mainland tourist destination accessible by road.
- Daylight extremes: Midnight sun is visible here from mid-May to late July; winter days are short with polar night conditions around the solstice.
What to See #
- Visitor centre (Nordkapphallen): A visitor centre with exhibition spaces, a café and viewing terraces that explain the natural and cultural context of the site and provide year-round facilities.

Tips for Visiting North Cape (Norway) #
- For the midnight-sun experience visit around local "evening" hours in summer and for Northern Lights pick late autumn/winter evenings - either avoids the daytime coach peaks and gives dramatic light.
- Drive the E69 to the visitor centre (Nordkapphallen) and time your arrival to avoid the large midday coach arrivals-early morning or late evening visits are far less crowded.
- If you have time and stamina, consider the hike to Knivskjellodden (the true northernmost point on the peninsula) instead of staying only at the plateau-many visitors never make that longer walk.
Best Time to Visit North Cape (Norway) #
