North American Cordillera
Mountains Major mountain chain along western North America
Extensive mountain system along western North America-from Alaska through the Rockies to Mexico-offering national parks, ski areas, alpine hiking and long scenic drives across diverse landscapes.
The North American Cordillera is an extensive mountain system that runs along the western edge of North America, comprising a series of ranges, plateaus and basins from Alaska through Canada and the United States into Mexico.
It includes major subranges such as the Alaska Range, the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Coast Mountains and the Sierra Madre systems, and contains the continent’s highest peak, Denali. The cordillera is a product of long-term tectonic activity including terrane accretion, uplift and volcanic processes.
These mountains have major impacts on regional climates, river systems and ecosystems and contain a wide variety of landscapes from glaciated peaks to desert basins. Human uses range from urban corridors and transport routes to resource extraction and protected wilderness areas.
Geographically the cordillera forms the western spine of the North American continent, running parallel to the Pacific coast and encompassing many of the continent’s principal mountain ranges.
- High peaks and influence: Contains Denali, the highest peak in North America at 6,190 metres, and numerous distinct subranges that influence regional climate and hydrology.
What to See #
- Rocky Mountains: The Rocky Mountains, a major continental spine stretching through Canada and the United States with high peaks such as Mount Elbert (4,401 m).
- Alaska Range and Denali: The Alaska Range, containing Denali at 6,190 metres, which is the highest peak in North America.
- Sierra Nevada, Coast Mountains and Sierra Madre ranges: The Sierra Nevada and Coast Mountains in the western United States and Canada, and the Sierra Madre ranges in Mexico, forming the southern continuation of the cordillera system.
Tips for Visiting North American Cordillera #
- Treat the North American Cordillera as a collection of regions rather than a single destination: pick the specific range (e.g., Rockies, Cascades, Sierra Nevada, Sierra Madre) first, then plan seasonally and arrange local permits or park passes for the chosen segment.
- If you want fewer crowds, prioritize lesser-known subranges, shoulder seasons and weekday access points rather than the iconic national-park trailheads; researching local trailhead capacities and permit systems (wilderness quotas, backcountry permits) will save time.
- Most travelers underestimate the logistical differences along the Cordillera - elevation, weather windows, and required permits vary widely by latitude and park, so consult local forest/park services for exact opening dates and access rules before committing to an itinerary.
