Main image

Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park is a protected area on the northwestern part of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, preserving high-Arctic glaciers, mountains and coastal ecosystems. The park protects remote glaciated landscapes and marine-influenced shorelines typical of this sector of Svalbard.

The area is notable for its glaciated fjords, mountain ranges and seabird cliffs and is visited primarily by scientific parties and organised expedition cruises or guided tours from Svalbard. Wildlife observation and glacier and fjord scenery are the principal attractions in a highly remote setting.

The national park was established to conserve the distinctive Arctic landscapes and ecosystems of northwestern Spitsbergen and to regulate activities in this part of the archipelago. Protection aims to maintain habitats for sea birds, marine mammals and polar bears and to preserve glacial and geological features.

The park occupies the northwest coastal sector of the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard, in the high Arctic north of mainland Norway; access is by boat, snowmobile or aircraft from settlements and research bases on Svalbard.

  • Arctic wildlife: Wildlife includes polar bears, Arctic foxes, reindeer and large seabird colonies that nest on coastal cliffs and islands.
