Norcia Abbey

The Benedictine abbey in Norcia (Basilica di San Benedetto) is a historic monastic complex in Norcia, Umbria, associated with Saint Benedict of Nursia. It is a principal religious and pilgrimage site in the town.

The complex traditionally includes the abbey church and monastic buildings that served liturgical and community functions; the basilica interior and façade were notable features before the 2016 earthquake. The site has drawn pilgrims and visitors because of its association with Saint Benedict and its central location in Norcia.

The abbey sits within the town of Norcia in the Valnerina valley of Umbria, close to the Sibillini Mountains in central Italy. The town is reachable by regional roads from larger Umbrian centres and forms part of Norcia’s compact historic centre.
