Nob Hill, San Francisco

Nob Hill is a centrally located neighborhood and one of San Francisco’s original hills, noted for its concentration of historic hotels, churches and former mansions. It is associated with the city’s late 19th-century railroad-era elite and remains an upscale residential and hotel district.

The area is dominated by landmark sites such as Grace Cathedral and the historic grand hotels including the Fairmont Hotel and Mark Hopkins Hotel. Two of San Francisco’s cable-car lines, Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason, run adjacent to the hill and are a common way visitors access the ridge.

In the late 19th century the hill was the preferred address for the city’s railroad magnates; many mansions stood there until the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of the neighborhood. The area was rebuilt with large hotels and civic buildings, preserving its association with wealth and public institutions.

Sitting just north of Market Street and adjacent to the downtown and Financial District, Nob Hill is about a mile north of the heart of downtown San Francisco and offers elevated views back toward the Bay.

• Cable lines: Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason streetcar lines climb the hill and terminate or pass near the ridge, providing direct links to downtown cable-car turnarounds.
• Best viewing times: Top-of-hill viewpoints give clear sightlines across the Financial District toward the Bay and to nearby neighborhoods, making sunrise and late-afternoon particularly popular for photography.

What to See #

• Grace Cathedral: An Episcopal cathedral on the crest of Nob Hill known for its modern replica labyrinths and stained glass; the building is a prominent landmark on the hilltop.
• Fairmont Hotel: A landmark grand hotel that opened in the early 20th century and occupies a prominent corner on the hill; the hotel has long been associated with Nob Hill's rebuilt skyline after 1906.
• Mark Hopkins Hotel: A historic hotel on the same ridge as other grand hotels, located at one end of the hill with views across the city and bay.
• Huntington Park: A small public square and landscaped area at the hilltop in front of the cathedral that provides elevated views over downtown San Francisco.
