Nizwa Fort

Nizwa Fort is a prominent 17th-century fortress in the city of Nizwa in Oman’s Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate. It is known for its stout circular tower and role as a regional stronghold.

The fort’s dominant feature is its large round tower with internal passages and gun slits; the complex includes courtyards, store rooms and rooms for administration. The fort sits adjacent to Nizwa’s traditional souq, which remains an active market area.

Built and expanded during the period of the Yaʿaruba/Imamate era in the 17th century, the fortress served defensive and administrative functions and has been restored for public access. It has long been a centre of regional power and trade.

Located in the centre of Nizwa city, the fort overlooks a palm-dotted plain in Oman’s interior and is a short walk from the old souq and other historic buildings.
