How to Get to Nizhyn
Nizhyn is easiest reached via Kyiv's airports (Boryspil KBP, Zhuliany IEV) followed by a rail or bus trip north to Nizhyn. The town has a functioning railway station (Nizhyn) with regular connections to Kyiv; direct road transfers are also possible but take around two hours from Kyiv.
Boryspil International Airport (KBP): The usual gateway for international flights. From KBP take the Kyiv Boryspil Express train to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi (central railway station) - the service typically costs about 80 UAH and takes ~35-40 minutes; from Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi you can catch regular trains to Nizhyn (see Train card) that take roughly 1.5-2.5 hours and cost in the range given below. Alternatively a taxi or private transfer from Boryspil directly to Nizhyn is possible by road (about 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic) - expect a private taxi or transfer to cost several thousand UAH one-way.
Kyiv (Zhuliany) International Airport (IEV): Zhuliany handles many domestic and short international flights and is closer to Kyiv’s centre. From IEV you can take a short taxi or ride-hail to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi (around 30-50 minutes by road depending on traffic; taxis typically 200-600 UAH) and then a train to Nizhyn; there are also airport bus/shuttle options into central Kyiv that take around 30-60 minutes and are cheaper than taxis.
Train: Nizhyn has a railway station (Nizhyn / Ніжин) served from Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi (Kyiv Central). Trains between Kyiv and Nizhyn are frequent - travel time is typically about 1.5-2.5 hours depending on service (regional vs. faster reserved trains). Fares vary by train type and class; expect roughly 50-200 UAH one-way. Check Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) for current schedules and to reserve seats.
Bus: Intercity buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) run from Kyiv’s main long-distance bus terminals to Nizhyn. Journey time by coach or minibus is usually around 2-3 hours depending on route and traffic; fares commonly range from about 100-250 UAH one-way. Buses drop off in or near the town centre; frequency is lower than trains, so check schedules in advance.
How to Get Around Nizhyn
Nizhyn is a small, walkable city; local buses and marshrutkas handle short trips while the railway is the most practical option for travel to Kyiv and other regional destinations. Taxis and ride-hail services are useful for convenience or off-hours, and renting a car is sensible only if you plan to explore the wider oblast.
- Local buses & marshrutkas (10-25 UAH) - Small local buses and marshrutkas are the backbone of getting around Nizhyn and the surrounding area. Fares are low and rides are short - expect to pay roughly 10-25 UAH per journey depending on distance and vehicle. Marshrutkas can be faster than city buses for direct routes but may be crowded and cash-only; carry small change and ask the driver or locals for the right stop.
- Taxis & ride-hailing (Bolt/Uklon) (100-300 UAH) - Taxis and app-based ride-hailing services (Bolt, Uklon where available) are convenient for door-to-door travel, especially early morning or late at night. Short intra-city rides are inexpensive compared with Kyiv but fares vary with demand - typical short trips cost around 100-300 UAH. Agree the price in advance or use the app; official city taxis will accept cash.
- Regional trains (50-200 UAH) - For trips to nearby towns and to Kyiv the railway is reliable and comfortable - Nizhyn station handles regional and long-distance services. Trains are often faster than road transport in bad traffic and useful for day trips; purchase tickets at the station or online via Ukrzaliznytsia. Seat reservations are recommended on longer/intercity services to ensure a place.
- Car rental / driving (~1,200-3,000 UAH/day (varies widely)) - Driving gives maximum flexibility for exploring Chernihiv Oblast and reaching nearby attractions. Rental cars are available in Kyiv (nearest major rental hubs) - expect to collect a car in Kyiv and drive ~1.5-2.5 hours to Nizhyn; fuel and tolls are additional. Roads around Nizhyn are generally passable but expect narrower urban streets and limited parking in the centre.
- Cycling & bike rental (100-400 UAH/day) - Nizhyn is compact enough to explore by bicycle and cycling is pleasant in fair weather; some guesthouses or local shops may offer rentals seasonally. Bikes are a good option for short trips and parks, but dedicated cycle infrastructure is limited so take care on main roads. Bring or rent a helmet and lights if riding after dark.
- Walking - The historic centre of Nizhyn is very walkable - many sights, cafés and markets are within easy walking distance of each other. Walking is often the fastest and most pleasant way to experience the town's architecture and markets, especially in good weather.
