National Park Coastal national park protecting mangroves and wildlife

Along The Gambia’s North Bank, Niumi National Park protects mangroves, coastal lagoons and tidal flats; birdwatchers, fishermen and beachgoers visit by boat for wildlife and quiet shoreline access.

Niumi National Park is a protected coastal reserve on the north bank of the Gambia River in the North Bank Division, protecting a mosaic of mangroves, tidal flats, salt marshes and sandy beaches at the river mouth.

The area is visited for birdwatching, coastal wildlife and boat-based exploration of mangrove channels; it supports resident and migratory birds as well as marine and estuarine species. Beach and mudflat habitats provide feeding and roosting sites for shorebirds and waterfowl.

The park was established to conserve the distinctive coastal and estuarine ecosystems at the river mouth and to protect breeding and feeding areas for birds and fish. Management focuses on maintaining wetland functions and supporting sustainable local use of natural resources.
