Niuatoputapu is an inhabited island in northern Tonga, part of the country’s northern island group. It is a small, remote island community with coastal villages and reef-fringed shorelines.
The island offers beaches, reef snorkeling and local village culture rather than large tourist facilities; visitors generally go for marine life, traditional village visits and quiet beaches. Natural coastal features and coral reefs are principal outdoor attractions.
Niuatoputapu has a long Polynesian history of habitation and was heavily affected by the 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami, which caused significant local damage. The island administration is part of Tonga’s northern island governance and recovery and rebuilding have shaped recent community development.
Geographically the island lies in the northern part of Tonga, several hundred kilometres north of the capital, Nukuʻalofa, and is reached by infrequent domestic air or sea services from other Tongan islands.
- Access: Served by a small airstrip with infrequent domestic flights and by occasional boats from other Tongan islands, so travel schedules can be irregular.

- Villages (Hihifo, Falehau, Vaipoa): One of the inhabited northern Tongan islands with three principal villages located along its coast; local settlements maintain traditional Tongan community life and subsistence activities.
