Niš Fortress is an Ottoman-era fortified complex in the city of Niš, Serbia, built on a site with earlier Roman and medieval fortifications. The present structure was largely rebuilt by the Ottomans in the early 18th century and remains one of the best-preserved examples of Ottoman military architecture in the region.
The fortress features high stone walls, towers, gates and an internal grid of streets with courtyards that now accommodate cafés, galleries and event spaces. It is a prominent public recreational area and cultural venue in Niš.
Historically the site has been a fortified locus since antiquity; the Ottoman reconstruction consolidated defensive works during their rule. The fortress later became integrated into the city’s urban fabric and adapted to civilian and cultural uses.
The fortress sits on the right bank of the Nišava River in central Niš, within easy walking distance of the city centre and main transport connections.

Niš Fortress is in the heart of Niš city, on a bend of the Nišava River, and is within easy walking distance of the city centre. From Niš’s main train and long‑distance bus stations it is typically a 5-15 minute walk to the fortress area.
You can also use local city buses to reach stops close to the fortress (ask locally for the ‘Tvrđava’/fortress stop). Driving into central Niš and parking at nearby municipal lots will place you a short walk from the fortress gates.

- Aim for late afternoon or early evening when the fortress is bathed in warm light and local cafés around the walls are liveliest, giving a fuller sense of the site in the city context.
- Enter from the city-center side (near the pedestrian streets) to combine a fortress walk with a short stroll through Tinkers Alley and the nearby market streets.
- Take time inside the ramparts to look for Ottoman-era features and small museums or exhibitions; many visitors only view the walls from outside and miss the interior courtyards and preserved structures.
