Ninna-ji Temple

Ninna-ji is a Buddhist temple complex in western Kyoto, founded in 888 and associated with the Shingon tradition. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Kyoto’s historic monuments and is noted for its traditional buildings and gardens.

The complex contains a main hall, a five-storey pagoda and carefully maintained gardens; it is particularly known for its Omuro cherry trees that flower later than typical Kyoto cherries. Visitors also see temple architecture restored during the early modern period and seasonal landscape displays.

Established in the late 9th century, the temple was historically linked with the imperial family and underwent major reconstructions in the early 17th century under the Tokugawa regime, which restored many of its present buildings. It has been maintained as an important temple and cultural site since then.

Located in the Omuro district of western Kyoto, Ninna-ji lies within walking distance of central attractions and is accessible by local bus and train services serving western Kyoto.
