Nilgiri Mountain Railway
Museum Heritage mountain railway famous for scenic rack-and-pinion sections
Steam‑hauled trains on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway climb steep ghat curves between Mettupalayam and Ooty, a UNESCO Mountain Railways of India route. Visitors ride for the vintage locomotives, rainforest and tea‑garden views, and the slow, mechanical drama of mountain travel.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain railway in Tamil Nadu linking Mettupalayam on the plains with Udhagamandalam (Ooty) in the Nilgiri Hills. The line opened in the early 20th century and is recognised for its engineering as part of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage site.
The route runs roughly 46 kilometres and gains about 1,800-1,900 metres in elevation, negotiating steep gradients with rack-and-pinion sections and tight curves. Passengers travel through tea plantations, forested gorges and a sequence of small hill stations while crossing viaducts and tunnels.
Construction began around the turn of the 20th century and the line opened in stages, becoming fully operational in the early 1900s to connect hill communities and tourist resorts with the plains. Over time it has continued in regular use and has been preserved for its historical and technical significance.
Geographically the railway climbs from the plains at the foothills of the Nilgiri Massif to the hill town of Ooty, crossing steep terrain in the southern Western Ghats. Major intermediate stops include Coonoor and several small stations that serve local villages and tea estates.
- Gauge, length and climb: The line is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow-gauge mountain railway of about 46 kilometres that climbs roughly 1,800-1,900 metres between the plains and Ooty.
- Heritage status and motive power: It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Mountain Railways of India' and still operates heritage steam and diesel-hauled services on some trains.
What to See #
- Mettupalayam station: Southern terminus and railway interchange at the plains edge, where services connect the hill line with the Indian broad-gauge network.
- Coonoor: Mountain station set among tea gardens, frequently used as a change point and offering views over steep gorges and rolling Nilgiri hills.
- Udhagamandalam (Ooty): Upper terminus in Udhagamandalam (Ooty), located at an elevation above 2,000 metres and adjacent to the town's botanical gardens and lake.
