Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a Shinto shrine complex in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and known for its lavish Edo period architecture and decoration. The present major structures date to the early 17th century and were substantially expanded under the Tokugawa shogunate.
The site features densely decorated buildings and gates with extensive wood carving, lacquer and gold leaf. Highlights include the ornate Yomeimon gate, the main halls, and numerous carved panels such as the Three Wise Monkeys and the Nemuri-neko or ‘Sleeping Cat’. The shrine grounds contain multiple buildings clustered along a short approach and occupy a compact but heavily ornamented precinct.
Construction and major rebuilding took place in the early 1600s following the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu; Tokugawa Iemitsu oversaw much of the 17th century expansion and embellishment. The complex has been preserved and restored over subsequent centuries and is protected as part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō World Heritage property.
The shrine sits within the city of Nikkō in mountainous Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo - roughly a 125 km journey from central Tokyo by road. It is set amid wooded hills and is part of a wider group of historic temples and shrines around Nikkō.
- World Heritage: Part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage listing since 1999 - many buildings date to the early 1600s and were expanded under Tokugawa Iemitsu in the 1630s.
- Visiting tips: Best viewed in late spring and autumn when foliage and decorative details are most visible; main complex is reached on foot from the Nikkō city centre via a short approach path.
