Nikkō National Park
National Park Japanese national park famous for shrines and waterfalls
Nikkō National Park combines mountain temples, waterfalls and Lake Chūzenji north of Tokyo. Tourists visit Toshogu Shrine, hike forest trails, and time trips for maple‑leaf colour and alpine scenery.
Nikkō National Park is a protected mountain and cultural landscape in Tochigi Prefecture in central Honshu, Japan, that combines historic religious sites with lakes, waterfalls and forested mountains. It is a major cultural and natural destination north of the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Visitors commonly explore the ornate 17th-century Tōshō-gū shrine complex with its lacquered and carved buildings, walk forested trails and visit Lake Chūzenji and Kegon Falls. The park offers lakeside walks, waterfall viewpoints, mountain routes and seasonal highlights such as autumn foliage.
The area around Nikkō has been a pilgrimage and religious site since medieval times and became particularly prominent during the early Edo period when Tōshō-gū was established as the mausoleum for Tokugawa Ieyasu. Over time it developed into both a spiritual centre and a recreational mountain resort.
The park lies in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture near the city of Nikkō, north of the Kanto plain; key sites cluster along the road and rail corridor that links Nikkō town with lakes and waterfalls higher in the park.
- Best time for autumn colours: Autumn foliage is a major seasonal draw; late October to early November is the peak period for colours in the park's mountain and temple settings.
- Kegon Falls height and viewing: Kegon Falls, one of Japan's well-known waterfalls, drops roughly 97 metres and has dedicated viewing platforms close to the lake area.
What to See #
- Tōshō-gū Shrine: A richly decorated Shinto and Buddhist shrine complex centred on the Tōshō-gū shrine, with lacquered and gilded carvings dating to the early 17th century.
- Kegon Falls (97 m): A 97-metre waterfall fed by the lake's outflow, accessible from the Lake Chūzenji area by short walkways and viewing platforms.
- Lake Chūzenji (approx. 1,269 m elevation): A high-altitude freshwater lake set below Mount Nantai at about 1,269 metres above sea level that provides boat access and lakeside walks.
