Main image

Niihau is a privately owned Hawaiian island west of Kauai, noted for its restricted public access and for a small resident Native Hawaiian community. The island has been privately held since the mid-19th century and is often referred to as the ‘Forbidden Island’ because of its limited visitation.

On the rare occasions when visits are permitted they are tightly controlled; the island has no tourist infrastructure and retains traditional lifestyles and Hawaiian language use among residents. Natural attractions include beaches, reefs and coastal scenery but there are no public accommodations.

Elizabeth Sinclair purchased the island in 1864 and it has remained in private ownership since then, managed to preserve the local community and much of the natural environment. The owners and residents have set rules that restrict access to protect the community and ecosystems.

Niihau lies off the western coast of Kauai in the Hawaiian archipelago and is part of the State of Hawaii; it is remote from the large population centers and reached only by special charter or authorised boat or helicopter services.

  • Access restrictions: The island is privately owned and access is tightly restricted; visits are normally only allowed by invitation or on approved tours and charters.
  • Cultural sensitivity: Local residents preserve traditional Hawaiian language and customs, and visitors should respect cultural sensitivities and any restrictions set by the owners and community.

What to See #

  • Puuwai village: The only permanent settlement on the island, a small village of Native Hawaiian families where Hawaiian language and traditional practices are still maintained.
