Niepokalanów
Religious Site Franciscan monastery founded by Maximilian Kolbe
Niepokalanów is a Franciscan monastery complex founded by Maximilian Kolbe, with a basilica, convent buildings and a museum; pilgrims and those interested in 20th‑century Polish Catholic history make visits.
Niepokalanów is a Roman Catholic friary and pilgrimage site in Masovian Voivodeship, Poland, founded in 1927 by Franciscan friar Father Maximilian Kolbe. It grew into one of the largest Franciscan communities and a major religious publishing centre in interwar Poland.
Pilgrims and visitors come to see the basilica, monastic complex, printing works and the museum dedicated to Kolbe’s life and the friary’s history. The site is active as a religious community and hosts regular religious services, retreats and guided visits rather than being a purely historical museum.
During World War II the friary provided refuge to displaced people and played a notable local humanitarian role; Maximilian Kolbe was arrested by occupying authorities and later died in Auschwitz in 1941. Today the friary continues religious, educational and publishing activities and is a place of pilgrimage for many Catholics.
Niepokalanów is located near the town of Teresin, west of Warsaw in central Poland, within a semi-rural landscape and reachable by road from Warsaw and nearby towns.
