Niederwald monument

The Niederwald monument (Niederwalddenkmal) is a national monument above Rüdesheim am Rhein in Hesse, Germany, erected to commemorate the 1871 unification of Germany. The monument complex was constructed between 1877 and 1883 and is crowned by a large allegorical bronze figure representing Germania.

Visitors come for the monument itself and for the sweeping views over the Rhine Valley, the vineyards of the Rhine Gorge and the river meanders below; a paved terrace and pathways make the site accessible. A cable car (the Niederwaldbahn) and road link the monument with Rüdesheim, making it a frequent stop on Rhine Valley tourist routes.
