The Niavaran Palace Complex is a palace and museum complex in northern Tehran that served as a principal residence of Iran’s royal family in the 20th century. It includes palace buildings, museum rooms and landscaped grounds set at the foothills of the Alborz mountains.
Exhibited areas include preserved royal apartments, reception rooms and a collection of household objects, decorative arts and personal items associated with the Pahlavi period. Gardens and outdoor spaces form part of the visitor route and are arranged around the palace buildings.
The complex was developed and expanded over the late Qajar and Pahlavi periods and became the private residence of the last Shah of Iran in the mid-20th century. After 1979 the site was converted into a public museum complex presenting the buildings and their contents to visitors.
Niavaran sits in the Niavaran neighbourhood in northern Tehran province at the southern edge of the Alborz foothills, north of Tehran’s city centre.
- Museum access: Guided tours focus on the preserved royal apartments and decorative interiors; some rooms and objects may be closed to photography or public access.
