Niau
Island Coral atoll in the Tuamotus with rich lagoon
An atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago, Niau attracts visitors for its shallow lagoon, seabird colonies and remote coral environment; travel here centers on snorkeling, fishing and observing lagoon‑side life.
Niau is an atoll in the Tuamotu group of French Polynesia, consisting of a coral ring surrounding a central lagoon. It is one of the smaller inhabited atolls in the archipelago.
The landform is a typical low-lying coral atoll with a narrow rim of motus and a sheltered lagoon in the middle; visitor facilities and services are limited due to the small local population. Activities focus on lagoon access and local culture rather than developed tourism.
As with other Tuamotu atolls, Niau formed from coral growth on a submerged volcanic base and supports small-scale local settlements and subsistence activities. Its environment is fragile and access is by sea or local air services when available.
Geographically it sits in French Polynesia’s Tuamotu-Gambier administrative subdivision in the South Pacific. The atoll is remote from large urban centres and is accessed by regional sea or air links from larger islands in French Polynesia.
- Administration: The atoll is administered as part of French Polynesia and lies in the central-southern sector of the Tuamotu archipelago.
How to Get to Niau #
Niau is a remote atoll in the Tuamotu/Gambier region of French Polynesia; the main gateway for the region is Papeete (Faa’a) on Tahiti. Niau is reached by inter-island plane or by private/charter boat from Papeete-check Air Tahiti for scheduled island flights to Niau Airport and local maritime services, as services are limited and infrequent.
Tips for Visiting Niau #
- Book inter-island flights well in advance - Niau is served only by infrequent regional flights and schedules change seasonally.
- Confirm lodging and transport with your guesthouse before arrival, as the atoll has very limited tourist infrastructure and operators can help arrange pickups from the airstrip.
Best Time to Visit Niau #
The best time to visit is the dry season (May-October) when weather is sunnier and sea conditions are more settled.
