Niah National Park
Cave Sarawak park famous for ancient cave complexes
Niah National Park in Sarawak protects limestone caves with prehistoric human remains and rainforest trails; visitors explore Niah Cave, archaeological sites and riverine jungle walks.
Niah National Park is a protected area in Sarawak, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo, centered on a limestone cave complex known as the Niah Caves. It is internationally important for its archaeological sites and tropical rainforest.
The park contains the Great Cave and the Painted Cave among a network of limestone caves, with interpretive trails and a long boardwalk that leads from the park entrance to the main cave mouth. Visitors come to see cave chambers, archaeological sites, and lowland Bornean forest habitats.
Archaeological excavations at the Niah Caves uncovered human skeletal remains and cultural material showing human presence in the area tens of thousands of years ago; notable finds include remains often cited in literature as among the oldest in Island Southeast Asia. Scientific work in the 20th century established the site’s importance for human prehistory in Borneo.
The park lies in northern Borneo within Sarawak, Malaysia, and protects a coastal limestone massif and surrounding lowland rainforest.
- Deep-time archaeological site: Contains the Niah Caves complex, including the Great Cave and Painted Cave, with archaeological human remains dated to around 40,000 years before present.
- Access to the caves: A boardwalk of roughly 2 kilometres links the park entrance to the main cave complex, providing the primary visitor approach through lowland rainforest.
