Niagara Escarpment

Cliff Prominent geological escarpment stretching across Ontario

The Niagara Escarpment runs across Ontario as a limestone ridge that frames cliffs, wineries and hiking routes like the Bruce Trail; visitors come for walks, caves and wine-country excursions.

Main image

The Niagara Escarpment is a long, continuous cuesta and cliff system that runs across parts of New York state and Ontario and continues into the U.S. Midwest; in Ontario it forms notable cliffs, gorges, and coastal features including Niagara Falls and the Bruce Peninsula. The escarpment is roughly 725 kilometres in length and is formed where erosion-resistant dolomitic rock overlies softer strata.

Key tourist highlights include the waterfalls and gorge at Niagara Falls, the karst and coastal scenery of the Bruce Peninsula around Tobermory, and numerous lookout points and conservation areas in the Hamilton-Dundas region. The escarpment hosts long-distance walking routes and numerous conservation areas that attract hikers, cavers, wildlife observers, and scenic photographers.

The escarpment is a geological formation defined by a dolomitic caprock that has resisted erosion relative to underlying rock layers, producing the steep slopes and cliffs seen at many locations. Over geological time this contrast in rock hardness created the prominent cliff line and related landforms.

In Canada the escarpment crosses southern Ontario from the Niagara region northwestward through the Hamilton area and along the Niagara Peninsula to the Bruce Peninsula; it forms a dominant landscape feature for towns and protected areas along its length.

  • Length and scope: The escarpment stretches roughly 725 kilometres and is a continuous geological feature that shapes cliffs, cliffsides, caves, and waterfalls across Ontario and into parts of the U.S.
  • UNESCO designation and trail access: Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1990; the escarpment supports a long-distance hiking route following its crest and foot slopes.

What to See #

  • Hamilton and Dundas section: The Hamilton-Dundas section with escarpment cliffs, conservation areas, and popular viewpoints such as Dundas Peak and nearby conservation lands.
