New Echota is the historic capital of the Cherokee Nation located in present-day Gordon County, Georgia; it served as the Cherokee national capital from 1825 until the forced removals of 1838.

The site preserves and interprets the former town with a museum, reconstructed Cherokee Council House and a replica print shop where the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper was produced beginning in 1828. Visitors can walk the village grounds and see foundations and interpretive exhibits that explain political, cultural and print history.

New Echota was established by the Cherokee as their political and administrative center in the 1820s and was abandoned after the Cherokee removal; the area is now managed as a state historic site.

It is located in northwest Georgia near the city of Calhoun in Gordon County.

How to Get to New Echota #

New Echota is located near Calhoun, Georgia. From I-75 take US-41/GA-225 toward Calhoun and follow local signs; the site is reached by road and has on-site parking. Nearest larger towns are Calhoun and Dalton.

  • Read the Republic of Cherokee Letters and the 1837 Cherokee Phoenix reproductions in the visitor center before walking the grounds-context deepens every ruin.
  • Bring a map of the reconstructed site: the jail, print shop and council house are spread across the site and easy to miss.
  • Visit nearby Calhoun or the Chattahoochee River to understand why this was a chosen seat of government.
