Nevado Sajama is a snow-capped stratovolcano in Oruro Department and is the highest peak in Bolivia at about 6,542 metres above sea level. The mountain is the central feature of Sajama National Park and is prominent across the Altiplano landscape.

The summit and its glacial slopes are visited by mountaineers and trekkers; the surrounding park contains thermal springs, high puna grasslands, and traditional Aymara settlements. The area is also noted for its volcanic landforms, high-elevation biodiversity and cultural sites.

Sajama has long been significant to local indigenous communities and became a focus for mountaineering and conservation in the 20th century; the national park was established to protect the mountain environment and cultural heritage features.

Tips for Visiting Nevado Sajama #

  • Plan climbs and treks during the dry season (roughly May-October) when roads and trails are most reliable and visibility for summit views is best.
  • Use the village of Sajama as your staging point: arrange a licensed local guide and transport there, and check road conditions from Oruro or La Paz before you set out due to remote mountain roads.
  • Combine a summit attempt or day trip with shorter local highlights-many visitors include visits to nearby Andean villages and thermal springs, and local guides will know the best access and timing.
