Nevado de Toluca

Nevado de Toluca is a large stratovolcano in the State of Mexico, west of Mexico City, notable for its broad summit crater containing two small lakes known as Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna. The mountain is one of the highest peaks in central Mexico and a frequent destination for hikers and nature trips.

Trails lead to the crater rim and down to the lakes, with the full hike typically done as a day trip from nearby towns. The crater lakes lie within a wide depression that provides sheltered camping and photo opportunities; altitude requires acclimatization for some visitors.

The volcano has been inactive in the recent historical period and has shaped the surrounding landscape through Pleistocene and Holocene eruptions. The area is managed for conservation and recreation as part of a national park.

Nevado de Toluca sits roughly 80 kilometers west of Mexico City in the Toluca Valley, surrounded by high plateaus and other volcanic cones in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.
