Neuwerk

Neuwerk is a small tidal island in the Wadden Sea at the outer edge of the Elbe estuary, administratively part of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The island has a small historic settlement clustered around a prominent lighthouse and has long served as a navigation point in the southern North Sea.

The island’s compact village, its lighthouse and the surrounding salt marshes and tidal flats are the island’s main attractions; the area is important for birdlife and seals. Visitors come for wildlife, the historic lighthouse and the experience of the tidal landscape.

Neuwerk’s lighthouse has medieval origins and the island has been used for coastal navigation and seasonal grazing for centuries; the landscape and settlement have been shaped by tides and reclamation efforts over time. Today Neuwerk forms part of the Wadden Sea conservation area and is managed with an emphasis on nature protection.

Neuwerk lies off the German North Sea coast near the mouth of the Elbe and is commonly reached from ports on the Hamburg-Cuxhaven coastline by boat or by organised guided walks across the mudflats at low tide.
