Neumarkt (Dresden)

Neumarkt is a central historic square in Dresden’s Altstadt, located immediately east of the Frauenkirche and framed by reconstructed Baroque and Neoclassical buildings. The area serves as a cultural and commercial hub of Dresden’s old town.

The square contains shops, cafés, museums, and civic spaces and is commonly used for markets and public events. Its pedestrianised layout and proximity to major attractions make it a frequent stopping point for tourists exploring Dresden.

Neumarkt and the surrounding quarter were largely destroyed in the Allied bombing of Dresden in February 1945; major reconstruction and selective restoration of historical facades took place from the 1990s onwards to recreate the prewar streetscape. The area now combines reconstructed historic buildings with contemporary infill.

Neumarkt lies in Dresden’s historic centre on the northern bank of the Elbe River, within a short walk of the city’s main rail stations and other central landmarks such as the Zwinger and the Semperoper.
