Nessana

Nessana (also called Nitzana) is an archaeological site in Israel’s Negev desert containing remains from Nabatean, Roman and Byzantine periods, including a fortified settlement and ecclesiastical buildings. The site is significant for its well‑preserved ruins and documentary finds from the late antique period.

Ruined walls, public and domestic buildings and at least one church are visible in the excavated area; the site has yielded inscriptions and a collection of papyri that are important for the study of Late Antiquity in the Negev. Visitors come to see the stone ruins, archaeological layout and desert landscape.

The settlement functioned as a desert way station and administrative centre on routes linking the Negev with Sinai and Egypt; it saw occupation and development under Nabatean, Roman and Byzantine administration and was abandoned in the early Islamic period.

Nessana lies in the western Negev of southern Israel close to the modern Nitzana community and the Egyptian border, on historic caravan and border routes across the desert.

• Nessana Papyri: Excavations at the site produced a notable archive of administrative and personal papyri and inscriptions dating mainly to the 6th and 7th centuries, which illuminate local administration and daily life.
