Nelson's Pillar
Monument Former Dublin monument commemorating Admiral Nelson; destroyed 1966
In Dublin’s urban history, Nelson’s Pillar was a 19th-century column on O’Connell Street removed after a 1966 explosion; it remains a reference point in discussions of public memory.
Nelson’s Pillar was a large column monument on O’Connell Street in central Dublin erected in 1809 to honour Admiral Horatio Nelson. It became one of the city’s best-known landmarks until its destruction in 1966.
The monument comprised a tall column topped by a statue of Nelson and dominated the main thoroughfare of Dublin for more than 150 years. It was a visible focal point on O’Connell Street and served as a meeting place and navigation landmark within the city centre.
The pillar was erected in the early 19th century by a Dublin committee and remained in place through the 19th and early 20th centuries. On 8 March 1966 it was badly damaged by an explosive device and the damaged remnants were removed shortly afterwards; the site was later redeveloped.
The former pillar stood on what is now the central stretch of O’Connell Street in Dublin city centre, on the north side of the River Liffey.
