Nelson's Dockyard
Museum Historic naval dockyard and UNESCO World Heritage site
Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour preserves 18th‑century Georgian naval workshops, restored buildings and a maritime museum. Yachts, regattas, restaurants and walking tours draw sailors and history visitors.
Nelson’s Dockyard is a restored 18th-century Royal Navy dockyard at English Harbour on the southern coast of Antigua. It is recognised for its Georgian dockyard architecture and historic naval infrastructure.
The site features restored yards, warehouses and officers’ houses now occupied by museums, shops, restaurants and a working marina that welcomes visiting yachts. Fortified positions and nearby viewpoints provide panoramic views over English Harbour and the surrounding coastline.
The dockyard hosts cultural events and maritime gatherings, and interpretation focuses on its role as a strategic naval base in the Age of Sail.
Established and expanded by the British Royal Navy in the 18th century, the dockyard served as a major Caribbean anchorage and service base. Over time it fell into disuse and was later restored in the 20th century as a historic and recreational harbour district.
Located at English Harbour on Antigua’s southern coast, the dockyard is close to the small settlements of English Harbour and Falmouth and is a short drive from the island’s main centres of activity.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Georgian-era dockyard, fortifications and associated coastal landscape that reflect British naval strategy in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
- Current use: The site functions today as a marina and restored historic district, popular for yachting events and heritage tours, with many structures dating from the 18th century.
