Neath Abbey is the roofless ruins of a medieval Cistercian monastery located at the edge of the town of Neath in south Wales. The foundation dates to the early 12th century and the site is one of the major monastic remains in the region.
The site comprises substantial stone ruins including parts of the church, cloister ranges and ancillary buildings; masonry and large window openings remain visible. Visitors commonly inspect the nave ruins, surviving arches and carved stonework while walking the surrounding open grounds.
Founded in the early 1100s by Cistercian monks, the abbey grew into an important regional religious house through the medieval period. It was suppressed and largely dismantled during the Tudor dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, after which much of the stone was reused for local buildings.
The ruins sit beside the River Neath on the northwestern edge of Neath town in Neath Port Talbot county. The site is within easy reach of the town centre and is accessed from roads that run alongside the river.
- Foundation and dissolution: Originates in the early 12th century and was dissolved during the Tudor suppression of monasteries in the 16th century.
