Nea Kameni

Nea Kameni is a small volcanic islet in the centre of the Santorini caldera, part of the South Aegean island group. It is the youngest of the caldera islets and consists of successive lava domes and scoria cones.

Visitors typically reach Nea Kameni by boat from Santorini’s ports and can follow marked paths to the crater rim to view fumarolic activity and recent lava surfaces. The island is a common stop on half-day and full-day caldera boat tours that include nearby hot springs.

The islet was formed by successive eruptions that built lava flows and domes within the caldera; volcanic activity on the islets and in the caldera has continued into the 20th century, and the area is monitored for seismic and volcanic activity.

Nea Kameni sits at the centre of Santorini’s flooded caldera, between the main island of Thera (Santorini) and the islet of Thirassia, and is accessible only by small passenger boats.
