Naval Port of Karlskrona
Historical Site 17th-century naval base and well-preserved shipyard town
Karlskrona’s 17th-century naval base features a planned grid, wooden naval buildings, shipyards, maritime museums and an island-studded archipelago used historically for naval operations.
A well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century naval port and planned town in Blekinge County, Sweden, established to serve the Swedish fleet and notable for its island harbour setting and naval architecture.
The ensemble combines active naval quays, historic dry docks and shipbuilding facilities with a compact planned town on the island of Trossö. Urban streets, public squares and military buildings reflect the original late 17th-century baroque planning of a naval capital.
Maritime museums and waterfront promenades provide access to preserved dockyards and exhibitions about shipbuilding and naval history, while views across the archipelago illustrate the strategic island setting of the port.
Founded in 1680 as a central naval base for the Swedish kingdom, the port and town developed rapidly through the 18th century as shipyards, fortifications and service facilities were constructed to support naval operations. Many original urban and dockside elements survive and continue to define the harbour landscape.
Located on an archipelago in the Baltic Sea off the coast of southeastern Sweden, the naval port occupies islands and harbour channels around the city of Karlskrona in Blekinge County.
- Founding date: Karlskrona was founded as a purpose-built naval base in 1680 and retains a large ensemble of 17th and 18th-century naval and urban planning features.
- Best viewpoints: Many of the best views of the harbour and facilities are from the waterfront and from the town's main square, Stortorget, which opens onto the inner harbour.

Tips for Visiting Naval Port of Karlskrona #
- Start your visit at the Marinmuseum on Stumholmen - it serves as the main public interpretation centre for Karlskrona's naval landscape and is where guided harbour and fortification boat tours depart, so buy tickets there first to plan onward visits.
- Take a scheduled boat tour into the archipelago to reach historic fortresses and island batteries that are otherwise inaccessible; many key naval sites are still active military areas and open only via organised excursions.
- Visit early on weekdays (late spring-early autumn) to avoid the main summer coach and cruise-ship crowds that concentrate around Trossö's Stortorget and the waterfront in mid-afternoon; mornings are quieter for photos and museum time.
