Natural Bridges State Beach

Natural Bridges State Beach is a California state beach and state park on the coast of Santa Cruz, known for its coastal sandstone arches and a notable monarch butterfly overwintering grove.

The site includes rocky intertidal tide pools, sandy beach, picnic areas and coastal trails. A protected grove supports thousands of monarch butterflies seasonally, and the shoreline features sea arches and sandstone formations visible from short coastal walks.

The area has been managed for public recreation and wildlife conservation by the California state parks system and is maintained for day use with parking and interpretive signage.

It sits on the northern shore of Monterey Bay within the city of Santa Cruz, adjacent to the West Cliff Drive coastal corridor and accessible from city streets and nearby parking.

• Monarch season: Season runs from about October through February and viewing is clearest on mild, sunny days when butterflies cluster in the tree canopy.
• Tide-pool timing: Low tides reveal the tide pools; check local tide tables and arrive near low tide for the best marine life viewing and rock-pooling opportunities.

• Sea arches: Natural sandstone sea arches carved where the surf meets softer sedimentary rock along the shoreline, visible from the beach and coastal trail.
