Natural Bridges National Monument
Park Desert monument preserving three large natural sandstone bridges
Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah protects three large sandstone bridges carved by the river; hikers and photographers come for short trails, geological formations and dark-sky stargazing opportunities.
Natural Bridges National Monument in southeastern Utah protects three large natural sandstone bridges carved by running water and stream erosion. The bridges are named Sipapu, Kachina and Owachomo and are the principal geological attractions within the monument.
Trails lead from a short scenic drive to viewpoints and, where permitted, to bases below some bridges; interpretive signs explain the geologic processes that formed the spans. The monument also contains archaeological sites and ruins left by ancestral Puebloan peoples who used the area, with some archaeological features visible from trails.
The bridges were formed over long periods by streams cutting through sandstone, leaving arched spans where the streambed flowed beneath. The monument was established to protect both the natural arches and the cultural resources associated with prehistoric and historic occupation.
The monument is located in southeastern Utah on a high desert plateau, roughly southwest of the Colorado River corridor and accessible by regional highways from towns such as Blanding and Monticello.
