A mixed natural and cultural landscape centred on Lake Ohrid and the historic town of Ohrid in southwestern North Macedonia, recognised for its ancient lakeshore settlements, religious architecture and exceptional aquatic biodiversity.
The lake area offers scenic shoreline vistas, traditional stone-built urban quarters and numerous medieval churches and monasteries with valuable fresco cycles. The Old Town contains narrow streets, traditional houses and fortress remains set immediately above the lake.
Lake Ohrid supports diverse aquatic habitats and many species found nowhere else in Europe, making the lake a focus for natural science and conservation as well as for shoreline recreation and cultural tourism.
The town of Ohrid has a long history as a cultural and religious centre in the Balkans, containing Byzantine and later medieval monuments and ecclesiastical complexes. The lakeshore settlements and monastic sites developed over many centuries and retain architectural and artistic evidence of that history.
