National Zoological Park (United States)

The National Zoological Park (Smithsonian’s National Zoo) is a free public zoo in Washington, D.C., managed by the Smithsonian Institution and established in the late 19th century. It functions as both a public animal collection and a research and conservation organisation.

The zoo covers a substantial landscaped site within Rock Creek Park and houses a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles and other animals used in public education and conservation programmes. Collections support species care, breeding and research activities.

Founded in 1889, the zoo has developed its grounds and exhibits over more than a century and operates alongside off-site conservation and research facilities devoted to species recovery and science.

Take the Metrorail Red Line to Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station; the zoo entrance is a roughly 5-10 minute walk from that station. The zoo is also reachable by DC Metrobus routes that serve Wisconsin Avenue and Connecticut Avenue.

By car from downtown Washington, DC it’s about 2-4 miles northwest via Connecticut Avenue NW; street parking near the zoo is limited and the zoo recommends using Metro when possible.
