National Park of Messolonghi - Aitoliko lagoons

The National Park of Messolonghi - Aitoliko lagoons is a protected coastal lagoon and wetland complex in Western Greece near the towns of Messolonghi and Aitoliko. It is a regional conservation area important for wetland habitats and waterbird populations.

Shallow lagoons, reedbeds and mudflats dominate the landscape, providing predictable birdwatching opportunities for waders, gulls and ducks. Small harbors and quays in Aitoliko and Messolonghi serve as launch points for short boat trips into the lagoon system and close-range wildlife viewing.

The lagoon system is a natural coastal formation shaped by sedimentation and sea influences and has long supported local fisheries and salt harvesting. Over time the area has been managed for conservation and sustainable use to protect habitats while allowing traditional fishing and aquaculture activities to continue.

The lagoons lie on the Gulf of Patras in Aetolia-Acarnania, Western Greece, between the town of Messolonghi and the island-town of Aitoliko, with easy road access from both settlements.
