National History Park – Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers

National History Park - Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers is the combined historic complex in northern Haiti that includes Citadelle Laferrière, the ruins of Sans-Souci Palace, and the Ramiers plantation and dependencies. The ensemble was created in the early 19th century under Henri Christophe following Haiti’s independence and functions as a national monument.

The complex was developed as a defensive and administrative centre to secure the northern kingdom and to centralize royal authority, with the Citadelle positioned on high ground and Sans-Souci serving as the royal palace in the valley below. Over time the complex fell into ruin in places but remained an iconic symbol of Haitian sovereignty and independence.

Geographically the park is situated in the Nord department above the plain near Milot and is commonly reached from Cap-Haïtien; the sites are linked by historic roads and steep paths between the valley and the citadel atop the ridge.
