National Air and Space Museum
Museum Museum preserving aviation and spaceflight artifacts and exhibits
The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall showcases historic aircraft and spacecraft - including the Wright Flyer and Apollo artifacts - with exhibits on aviation, spaceflight and engineering.
The National Air and Space Museum is a Smithsonian museum dedicated to the history and technology of aviation and spaceflight, operating a principal Museum on the National Mall and a large companion facility, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, near Dulles Airport.
The Mall building features landmark artifacts that include the 1903 Wright Flyer, Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, and the Apollo 11 command module, while the Udvar-Hazy Center displays large aircraft and spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle Discovery, and contains conservation and restoration hangars.
The collection and exhibition program grew from early 20th-century aviation enthusiasts and was consolidated within the Smithsonian; the Mall building opened in 1976 and the Udvar-Hazy Center opened in 2003 to accommodate larger objects and expanded public access.
The Mall building is located on the National Mall in central Washington, D.C.; the Udvar-Hazy Center is in Chantilly, Virginia, adjacent to Washington Dulles International Airport, about a 30- to 45-minute drive from the Mall building.

How to Get to National Air and Space Museum #
The National Air and Space Museum is on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and is easily reached by Metro. Tips for Visiting National Air and Space Museum #
- If you want the biggest artifacts, plan a separate trip to the Steven F. Udvar‑Hazy Center near Dulles (home to large aircraft and Space Shuttle Discovery)-it's a different site but essential if you expect to see those pieces.
- Visit the Mall location at opening or late afternoon to avoid peak tour-bus hours; popular exhibits (Wright Flyer, Apollo artifacts) draw the biggest crowds so see them first.
- Check film and planetarium schedules when you arrive-timed shows are a good way to break up a crowded visit and sometimes have smaller lines than the main galleries.
Best Time to Visit National Air and Space Museum #
Visit on weekday mornings in spring or fall to avoid the heavy summer and holiday crowds; museums remain open year-round.
