Nassau Castle

Nassau Castle is a hilltop medieval castle ruin above the town of Nassau on the Lahn River in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and is the ancestral seat associated with the House of Nassau.

Visitors encounter ruined defensive works including the keep, inner bailey and sections of curtain wall, with walking paths that provide views over the town and the Lahn valley. The ruin is a compact site that is accessed from the historic town below.

The castle was founded in the medieval period, with the site associated with the counts of Nassau from the 12th century onward; it served as a regional stronghold and the origin point for the noble House of Nassau. Over many centuries it fell into disuse and was partially destroyed in later conflicts, leaving the present ruin.

The ruin sits on a prominent hill directly above the town of Nassau on the Lahn, within the Westerwald/Lahn region of Rhineland-Palatinate.
