Näsijärvi is a large lake in Pirkanmaa, Finland, lying north of the city of Tampere and forming one half of the city’s twin-lake setting connected by the Tammerkoski rapids. The lake has numerous islands, inlets and bays and is used extensively for boating, fishing and seaside cottages.
The lake has long been integral to Tampere’s industrial and urban development because water from Näsijärvi drains through Tammerkoski into Pyhäjärvi, powering mills and later hydroelectric facilities. Today the lake is a recreational resource with ferry routes, marinas and shoreline parks.
Näsijärvi sits immediately north of Tampere city centre, forming the northern waterline for the urban area and extending into forested and rural surroundings to the north.
