St. Petersburg arch commemorating Russia’s 1812 campaign, the Narva Triumphal Arch was rebuilt in stone in the 19th century. Visitors pause for photographs and to study its classical columns and reliefs along Ligovsky Prospekt.
Narva Triumphal Arch is a triumphal arch in Saint Petersburg erected to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812. It is one of the city’s 19th-century public monuments with a classical, columned composition and sculptural decoration.
The arch features a central vaulted passage flanked by colonnades and allegorical sculptural groups, and is a common photo subject on Moskovsky Prospekt. It is relatively compact compared with imperial arches in some other capitals and functions as a formal gateway rather than a long ceremonial avenue.
A temporary wooden triumphal arch was erected soon after the 1812 campaign; the present stone version was rebuilt in the 1830s under architect Vasily Stasov to replace the earlier structure. The arch has been preserved and restored in subsequent decades as a city monument.
The monument stands on Moskovsky Prospekt near the historical Narva Gate axis in Saint Petersburg, within the city’s urban centre rather than a park setting.
- Best viewpoint: Sits on Moskovsky Prospekt and is easily viewed from the avenue; the arch is lit at night which improves photographic detail.

- Visit around sunrise or at dusk when vehicular traffic is lighter and the arch is dramatically lit for better photographs and a quieter experience.
- Approach the monument on foot from nearby streets or parks rather than by car to avoid the busiest carriageways and to get close enough to examine the sculptural details.
