Naruto whirlpools
Area Powerful tidal whirlpools in Naruto Strait between islands
Tidal maelstroms in the Naruto Strait, Tokushima Prefecture; tourists take sightseeing boats or watch from the Ōnaruto Bridge as strong tidal currents form whirlpools.
The Naruto whirlpools are tidal whirlpools that form in the Naruto Strait between Awaji Island and Shikoku’s Tokushima Prefecture, produced by strong tidal currents through a narrow channel. They are best known for their dramatic circular eddies at peak tidal flow.
Observation can be from the water on sightseeing boats that run through the channel, from land observation decks in Naruto Park, or from the glass-sided Uzu no Michi walkway under the Onaruto Bridge that runs above the strait. The size and frequency of the whirlpools vary with tidal range and local bathymetry.
The phenomenon is driven by the large tidal exchange between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific through the narrow strait; whirlpools are most pronounced around spring tides. Local operators time boat departures and viewing schedules to coincide with predicted strong currents.
The whirlpools occur in the Naruto Strait, a narrow channel separating Awaji Island from Shikoku, adjacent to the city of Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture.
- Best time to view: Whirlpools are strongest at spring tides when tidal currents through the narrow Naruto Strait intensify and can form vortices up to roughly 20 meters in diameter.
What to See #
- Onaruto Bridge - Uzu no Michi walkway: A covered pedestrian walkway beneath the Onaruto Bridge called Uzu no Michi offers glass-sided viewing galleries directly above the strait for viewing whirlpools from the bridge.
- Sightseeing boats and observation cruises: Sightseeing boats operate from ports on both the Awaji Island and Tokushima sides and take passengers down into the strait for close views of the whirlpools at peak flow.
- Naruto Park observation decks: Naruto Park and observation decks on the Tokushima side provide land-based viewing platforms with interpretive panels and ticketed viewing areas at the strait.
How to Get to Naruto whirlpools #
The Naruto whirlpools are viewed from the Naruto area in Tokushima Prefecture, either by sightseeing boat from Naruto Port or from viewpoints on/under the Ōnaruto Bridge. From Tokushima Station take the JR Naruto Line to Naruto Station (journey roughly 40-50 minutes); from Naruto Station it’s about a 5-15 minute walk to Naruto Park, the port boarding points and the bridge observatories. By car, drive from central Tokushima roughly 20-30 km via National Route 11 toward Naruto (about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic).
Tips for Visiting Naruto whirlpools #
- Plan your visit around local tide tables-the Naruto whirlpools are strongest around the high and low tide peaks, so time your visit for those tide windows.
- You can view the whirlpools from the Ōnaruto Bridge's Uzu-no-Michi pedestrian walkway (under the bridge) without taking a boat, or book a sight-seeing boat if you want a closer, lower-angle perspective-choose the option that matches sea conditions and your tolerance for motion.
- Head to viewpoints on either side of the strait before midday on weekdays to avoid the busiest visitor periods; bring prepared schedules since boats and bridge walkway access can be timed around tides.
Best Time to Visit Naruto whirlpools #
Best in spring and autumn when weather and sea conditions tend to give good visibility for viewing the whirlpools; avoid typhoon season.
