Nanzen-ji Temple
Temple Historic Zen temple in Kyoto with iconic aqueduct
A major Zen temple complex in Kyoto, visited for its temple halls, subtemples, landscaped gardens and the red brick Suirokaku aqueduct that crosses the grounds.
Nanzen-ji is a major Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple complex in Kyoto, Japan, formally established at the end of the 13th century. It is one of Kyoto’s principal Zen temples and a key stop on many cultural itineraries.
The complex contains large wooden structures and landscaped gardens, most famously the massive Sanmon gate and the Meiji-era brick aqueduct that crosses the grounds. Hojo gardens and several sub-temples offer a variety of garden styles and temple architecture across a spread of hectares.
Nanzen-ji was converted from an imperial retirement villa into a Zen temple under imperial patronage in 1291 and later expanded and rebuilt through the medieval and early modern periods. The Sanmon gate was reconstructed in the early 17th century and other buildings have been repaired repeatedly following fires and natural wear.
The temple sits at the southern end of the Philosopher’s Path and in the Higashiyama area of eastern Kyoto, on the lower slopes of the eastern hills that border the city centre. It is within walking distance of other major Higashiyama sights.
- Aqueduct: The brick aqueduct across the grounds was built during the Meiji period (late 19th century) as part of Kyoto's waterworks and is a distinctive non-Buddhist element on the temple site.
- Viewing point: The temple complex includes several sub-temples and gardens; the Sanmon gate provides an elevated viewing platform and is commonly visited for city views.
What to See #
- Sanmon: The large wooden main gate facing the temple complex, reconstructed in the early 17th century and providing a viewing platform over Kyoto; the gate is 5 bays wide and gives views down toward the city.
- Hojo (Abbot's quarters and garden): The chief abbot's residence and garden area that contains karesansui and pond-style gardens dating to the Edo and later periods, used for formal Zen displays and preserved garden layouts.
- Meiji-era aqueduct: A red brick Meiji-period waterway that runs through part of the temple grounds, constructed in the late 19th century as part of Kyoto's modern waterworks and now a popular photographic spot.
How to Get to Nanzen-ji Temple #
Nanzen-ji is in northeastern central Kyoto. Take the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line to Keage Station - from Keage it’s about a 10-15 minute walk to the temple complex (you can also walk there from the Philosopher’s Path). From central Kyoto the site is a short taxi ride or a direct local-bus ride depending on your starting point.
Tips for Visiting Nanzen-ji Temple #
- Arrive early (soon after opening) to enjoy Nanzen-ji's Sanmon gate and main precinct before tour groups fill the paths; mornings are quieter for photos and contemplation.
- Enter from the Philosopher's Path end or the small side streets to access the brick aqueduct (Suirokaku) and quieter subtemples; Tenjuan's moss garden and smaller temple buildings are often missed but well worth the short detour.
- If you want a view over Kyoto, pay the small fee to climb the Sanmon gate-many visitors skip this and miss the elevated perspective.
Best Time to Visit Nanzen-ji Temple #
