Nanchan Temple

Nanchan Temple is a Buddhist temple complex on Mount Wutai in Shanxi province, China, notable for preserving one of the oldest extant timber buildings in the country. The temple’s principal hall is dated to 782 AD in the Tang dynasty and is of great architectural and historical importance.

The site’s highlight is the temple’s Main Hall, which retains original timber construction techniques and houses Buddhist statuary and iconography associated with Tang-period practice. The building is studied for its structural carpentry and early medieval Chinese architectural features.
