Nan Madol
Ruins Ruined ceremonial city built on artificial islets
Nan Madol on Pohnpei comprises artificial islets and ruined stone structures built atop a lagoon. Visitors arrive by boat to see the basalt-wall foundations, archaeological remains and the site’s remote ocean setting.
Nan Madol is an archaeological site of ruined ceremonial and political buildings built on a lagoon off Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. The site dates to the early second millennium CE and served as the ceremonial center and capital of the Saudeleur dynasty.
The complex consists of nearly 100 small artificial islets formed by stacked basalt columns with narrow tidal channels between them, creating a labyrinth of stone walls, platforms and ruined structures. Key visible features include massive basalt stone walls, ceremonial platforms and the remains of tombs and royal compounds spread along the lagoon shoreline. Visitors come for archaeological interest, dramatic ruined masonry, and to learn about the prehistoric maritime engineering represented by the basalt constructions.
Local tradition attributes construction to the Saudeleur dynasty; archaeological evidence indicates concentrated building activity from about the 12th century CE onward, with the site functioning as Pohnpei’s political center until the dynasty’s collapse. After abandonment the islets fell into ruin and vegetation growth, and modern study and limited excavation have continued to clarify construction techniques and chronology.
Nan Madol lies off the eastern coast of Pohnpei island adjacent to the islet of Temwen, within Pohnpei State. The site is reached by short boat trips from the Pohnpei shoreline and is situated in a shallow protected lagoon environment.
- Access: Located on a lagoon off the eastern coast of Pohnpei, access is by boat from Pohnpei and local guides are required in many cases due to shallow reefs and limited facilities.
- Scale and condition: The site comprises roughly 90 artificial islets built of stacked basalt logs and coral fill; much of the complex is overgrown and not fully excavated.
Tips for Visiting Nan Madol #
- Book a guided boat tour from Kolonia (Pohnpei) and confirm landing permissions in advance-most visits require a local guide or operator familiar with the channels and conservation rules.
- Schedule the trip for early morning when seas are calmer and wind is lower; afternoon winds can make the boat crossing uncomfortable or lead to cancellations.
- Follow the guide's instructions and local preservation rules closely-Nan Madol's stone is fragile and many areas are closed or only viewable from boardwalks/boats to protect the ruins.
